The white-winged flufftail was downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered in South Africa's 2025 regional Red Data Book after improved surveys found more birds there; it remains Critically Endangered globally and breeds in Ethiopia and South Africa.
Notes on verification
Population estimate (~700) and Ethiopia/South Africa range are well corroborated by IUCN, BirdLife, and Birds of the World. However, Zimbabwe is not supported as part of the species' confirmed range by any major source, which cite only Ethiopia and South Africa.
